Luis Pacheco de Melo, 46 years old, is Chief Financial Officer at Portugal Telecom, the largest Portuguese telecommunications company, with over ninety three million customers in Portugal, Brazil, Africa and Asia, as at the end of year 2011. Luis Pacheco de Melo was appointed CFO of PT in April 2006 and was re-elected in April 2012 for the 2012-2014 term.
Luis Pacheco de Melo began his career at PT as CFO of the Pay-TV division (PT Multimédia) in 2002, until the company’s spin-off in 2007. During his 8 years at PT, Luis Pacheco de Melo has been holding key management roles in the main business units of PT, both in the domestic market and also in international market. Luis Pacheco de Melo serves as Member of the Board of Directors of the domestic businesses company (PT Portugal), including the fixed-line and the mobile business, and is a Member of the Board of Directors of the Angolan mobile division (Unitel), of the holding company that owns PT’s stakes in Africa (Africatel) and of PT II, PT’s holding for international businesses. He also served as Member of the Board of Directors of the Brazilian mobile division (Vivo) until the company’s disposal in September 2010.
Prior to joining PT, Luis Pacheco de Melo served, from 1998 to 2002, as invited Member of the Executive Committee of BES Investimento and as Director of the Emerging Markets Department of BES Investimento Brasil. From 1995 to 1998, Luis Pacheco de Melo worked in M&A and Corporate Finance at UBS (London) and, from 1992 to 1995, at BES Investimento.
In 2011 Luis Pacheco de Melo was distinguished by Institutional Investor as the third best CFO in the European telecommunications sector and the best CFO in Portugal. In 2010 was elected, by Institutional Investor, as the third best European CFO in the telecommunications sector and by Extel as the best CFO in Investor Relations in Portugal.
Luis Pacheco de Melo holds a degree in Civil Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico and completed a MBA at IESE Barcelona.
