Friday, December 02, 2005

The exhibition “PT close to you” has arrived in the Azores. Parked in the city of Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, the Portugal Telecom truck promises to show all the emotions of communications. Highlight went to the availability, via Cabo TV Açoreana of access to the four television channels and to RTP Açores

The island of São Miguel, in the Azores had a special visitor. The roadshow truck suspended its wheels to go to Ponta Delgada, this time by boat. The activities started today, 2nd December and will continue until 8th December.

During the morning Luís Pacheco de Melo, Director of TV Cabo, together with António Caria, Director of Cabo TV Açoreana visited Arrifes, a poorer area of the island, specially at technological level and offered all the inhabitants the new TV Cabo Funtastic Life service. An important gesture for these people “specially because it can help to reduce the isolation factor that affects many”, stated Luís Pacheco de Melo.

The afternoon started with a press conference which had the presence of José Contente, Regional Secretary for Homes and Equipment; Paulo Campos, Deputy Secretary of State and António Caria for Public Works.
Luís Pacheco de Melo started by presenting himself as Chairman of Cabo PT Açoriana and son of a Azorian who was very proud of being there “on this important day for all of us and for the Autonomous Region of the Azores”. He spoke of the company’s younger and more dynamic image and of the protocol signed on 5th November. “The Azores was an excellent testing field not only for the digital area but also in the fight against hacking”, stated the Director. “However, in spite of the investment already made within this region being over 20 million euros we want to continue to invest in Cabo TV Açoreana with more contents and better service”, he added.

José Contente spoke of the quick development of telecommunications within the islands of the archipelago. “Nine years ago we only had RTP Açores, but today everything is way different”, he underlined.

Paulo Campos was clear when he mentioned the importance that this government wants to give to the fight against info-exclusion. “As from today there will already be Azorians whose homes will have equipment that will allow them to access all the channels”.

However, the revelation of this visit was: “that as from 2006  RTP Açores will feature on TV Cabo digital, which will certainly be won by TV Cabo Açoreana, and by TV Cabo on the mainland”.

Later in the afternoon there was a visit to the new truck of “PT close to you”, inaugurated by the Secretary of State where all the PT technologies were displayed. The digital newspaper, this time is the Açoriano Oriental, the oldest newspaper in Portugal.

Later there was a visit to the third age home Mae de Deus, an institution that dates back some 150 years, and NetCabo service was offered for one year. This offer was extended to yet another three institutions, the Patronato de São Miguel, the Irmandade do Livramento and the Associação Cristã da Mocidade.

Note that the objective of this initiative is to present the products and services of the various Group companies and to bring the company and local community closer. The truck is parked in Av. Infante D. Henrique, by the city entrance.
