PT Wi-Fi Box – Take Internet outdoors
Wednesday, March 29, 2006

PT Wi-Fi presented yet another of its innovations pertaining to Wireless Internet.  The new Wi-Fi Box is going to allow the increase of places with broadband Internet access.

During the press conference that took place this morning, PT Wi-Fi presented a new concept in Portugal that promises to revolutionise the service of wireless Internet access – the PT Wi-Fi Box.

The PT Wi-Fi Box is a self-installed product that allows owners of public places to create a Wireless Internet Area (HotSpot) and to render available Internet access to its clients.  This new product derives from the need to satisfy the growing request for HotSpot installations.  Directed at small public areas (cafés, outdoor cafés, restaurants, clinics, gymnasiums, etc.), the aim is that the introduction of this product increases to double the number of places with PT Wi-Fi coverage (currently 900 places in Portugal) and consequently to contribute towards the massification in the access to the Information Society.

Rogério Canhoto, managing director at PT Wi-Fi, explains that the company “received lots of requests of places which were not priorities yet but that wished to have the Wireless Internet service.  We didn’t have a product adequate to these places so we looked for a solution accessible to owners of public spaces.”

Similarly to what happens in the United States and in the United Kingdom, now in Portugal the broadband Internet service can also be available to the public in general at any place.  For this to happen you just need a portable PC, a mobile, a PDA or equipment with compatible technology.  In addition to belonging to the largest network of HotSpots in Portugal, the owners of public spaces can now profit from additional income with the sale of PT Wi-Fi access cards and an assistance line 24 hours a day.

Tiago Rodrigues, product manager,
made a presentation of the PT Wi-Fi Box

As Tiago Rodrigues, product manager at PT Wi-Fi, highlighted, “the product is quite innovative.  There a few telecommunication operators in the world that have this product in their portfolio and I think that PT shows that, once again, it is on the brink of innovation.”

The Wi-Fi Box can be purchased at PT Comunicações stores or through PT commercial managers for Euro 499, and an offer of Euro 500 in access cards (vouchers) of PT Wi-Fi.

This service will place the Internet closer to the Portuguese citizens and will take the internet outdoors.
