Management of medical appointments via SMS at the Santa Maria Hospital
Monday, April 03, 2006

The Santa Maria Hospital is going to offer a new form of contacting and interacting with its users. A partnership with TMN that assures the management of medical appointments within the hospital.

The new application that the Santa Maria Hospital (HSM) is going to render available allows the automatization of operations related to the confirmation of medical appointments and exams, notification of postponements, amongst others by SMS. TMN is going to be the main supplier of telecommunication services for the implementation of this innovative solution.

The service will be on trail in the beginning of April and will coincide with the bookings of screenings on 6th, 7th and 8th April that mark the 2006 World Voice Day. A Otolaryngology Service promoted by HSM with the aim of raising awareness on the importance of prevention and advocating for voice preservation.  Subsequently the service for the booking of medical appointments via SMS will be available for the other services provided by the hospital.

Within a first phase of the project, the confirmation of medical appointments will be made by the HSM. Whenever you book a medical appointment and indicate a mobile phone, the user will receive an SMS requesting the confirmation of date and hour indicated for the appointment. Upon receiving this message, the user can confirm automatically or by phone.

HSM will pay the confirmation SMS and the user will pay the answer. Whenever it is not possible for the hospital to book the appointment, the user will be informed via SMS and will be contacted to book a new appointment.

Subsequently, within a second phase, the request for appointments will be done via SMS by the user to a number which will be announced by the hospital.

This innovation is going to make things easier for patients and will simplify the process of confirmation of appointments, thus affording greater efficiency and comfort.

The partnership with TMN shows that the new communication technologies can work alongside public services making theses better and thus satisfying the community in general.
