PT is solidary with the combat against the dengue epidemic that has broken out in Cape Verde and therefore has associated itself with AMI– International Medical Aid, an NGO that has been fighting the outbreak of the disease and respective consequences for the population of that country by sending medical teams and medication, an action now reinforced by PT’s support.
The aid, which will reach the field this week, includes health professionals, equipment for a field hospital, vehicles and medication aiming to mitigate the consequences of the outbreak of the disease, thus avoiding more death cases. The teams comprehend two doctors and four nurses on two islands, and there will be clinical medication and equipment to make possible the treatment of the symptoms as well as the follow-up of the patients, thus preventing the propagation of the virus, which has already affected most of the islands.
It is worth recollecting that the dengue virus is propagated by the Aedes Egypsis mosquito, the vehicle for this kind of virus, an easy booster of this hemorrhagic fever that may ultimately lead to death.
According to Zeinal Bava, chief executive officer of Portugal Telecom, “our multiyear long strong connection to Cape Verde prevents us from remaining indifferent to this situation. It is imperative to act now, and this is what we are doing with AMI in order to soften the effects of a situation that could reach serious proportions for the Cape-Verdean people. We have no doubts that the collective effort on course will enable Cape Verde to surpass this situation”.
Fernando Nobre, chairman of AMI, said that “this partnership with PT is most important for AMI to be able to carry out a more effective action, extended to the other islands of the archipelago. Once again, PT demonstrates its trust on AMI’s activity, and its social responsibility is made clear. This mission is of utmost importance for AMI, maintaining close ties with this country over the last 21 years, where an extremely positive evolution in terms of health has taken place”.
