PT got second at the Engagement Rating Portugal 2010 Awards
Tuesday, November 02, 2010
The commitment and performance of Portugal Telecom in the domain of sustainability keep gaining recognition. PT has recently got the second position at the Engagement Rating Portugal 2010 Awards.

The research, conducted by SDC (Sair da Casca) consultancy, is based on the Accountability Rating, a methodology that evaluates company sustainability practices and their impact on economy, society and environment.

Accountability Rating was developed by CSR Consultancy and by the AccountAbility thinktank and was published by ‘Fortune’ magazine between 2005 and 2006, covering the 100 biggest companies in the world, selected from the Fortune Global 500 list. The methodology used and the final result (whose values may vary from 0 to 100) have enabled to obtain comparable results between the leading companies of each country globally.

Recognizing the importance of transparent management and considering that stakeholder expectations should be at the centre stage of the sustainability strategy of companies, Sair da Casca – Sustainable Development Consultancy implemented Accountability Rating in the Portuguese context. This consultancy started to apply this methodology in 2008 in different Portuguese companies in order to contribute in qualitative terms to the reporting practices of the national entrepreneur tissue. In 2009, it extended its analysis to Spain, thus developing two ratings: Accountability Rating Portugal 2009 and Accountability Rating Spain 2009. In its second edition, the consultancy aimed to show the evolution of national companies in comparison to the previous year as well as a benchmark with the Spanish enterprise tissue.

In order to continue to promote transparency at Iberian level and considering the importance of company commitment with engagement, SDC adapted the Accountability Rating methodology and promoted the first edition of the Engagement Rating Portugal 2010 and Engagement Rating Spain 2010 Awards. This is an initiative whose goal is to help companies improve their transparency in the way how they involve their stakeholders in business-critical issues and in commitment in terms of sustainability, considering other companies under analysis. The Engagement Rating methodology is based on public information provided by companies and takes four dimensions into consideration – economic, social, environmental, strategy and management – whose evaluation is made according to a score from 0 to 20.

The Portuguese results from 2010 were disclosed on 27 October and communicated as an exclusive at the Exame magazine. According to these results, PT got the second position of the table at the global classification of the Engagement Rating Portugal 2010 (with a value of 73.3). It is worth recollecting that PT had reached last year the eighth position of the Accountability Rating Portugal. According to the SDC research, this significant increase is the consequence of the consolidation of the company’s effort in terms of sustainability and of the “structuring of the processes of involvement with stakeholders’.

The results obtained at the Engagement Rating Spain Awards 2010 also allow a comparative evaluation of the Iberian scenario. Base on this scenario, PT got the third position ahead of Telefónica, as the first position is occupied by EDP.
