The partnership with TVI and the consequent availability of the TVI 24 channel consolidates the goals defined since MEO’s launch, which were to become a leader in pay-TV and to make available the best content to the Portuguese. According to Pedro Leitão, Board Member, PT, “our major bet is precisely differentiation, which is obtained through winning partnerships that leverage the know-how in terms of technology and contents as is the case of the partnership of MEO with TVI. We want and will continue to work with the best content producers and with those that follow the rhythm that we move to on the path that we are following to give more and better services to MEO customers, towards our goal of future leadership.”
This MEO launch coincides with the renewal of TVI 24 channel and the September premiere of a number of new shows that will consolidate the offer of this channel in the domain of politics, economy, sports, focusing especially the protagonists of the news.
Since its launch, MEO features a strong bet on content and differentiation on the market through investment in new technologies and interactivity, enabling customers to define a new way of watching TV in Portugal. With just two years of activity, MEO has already 700,000 customers and a 27 percent market share. As Pedro Leitão explains, “MEO is an international case study of leadership and innovation, enabling the transformation of the television experience of the Portuguese, and the business model of wireline as well. We have inverted the downtrend of the customer base through MEO, as we have provided our customers with a competitive price for three services (voice, internet and television) as well as the control of the TV experience: they watch the contents that they want, when they want, where they want”.
Launched in April 2008, MEO is based on a multi-platform logic – IPTV (ADSL or Optical Fibre), Satellite and Mobile – and currently has 120 channels, more than 2,500 channels at the VideoClub and a number of advanced functionalities, such as: TV Guide, TV Pause, serial Recording, Remote Recording, Multi-room recording, Channel acquisition (directly on TV Menu via TV remote control), High Definition Contents, Karaoke and Games. These functionalities are supplemented by interactive services such as SAPO on MEO, Meo Kids or Meo Magazine.
