PT improves its position in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index
Thursday, September 08, 2011
Although PT was included for the second consecutive year in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, its position was improved this year, thus becoming a worldwide reference among telecommunications operators.

We have reached two things: to remain included in the index and to improve our position. Congratulations to everyone”, said Zeinal Bava, chief executive officer. This recognition by the analysts of the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (SAM) confirms the success of the PT-developed sustainability and social responsibility strategy and practices at the economic, social and environmental level.

PT is one of the nine telecommunications companies worldwide with the best practices in terms of sustainability - AT&T (USA), British Telecom (UK), Koninklijke KPN (Netherlands), KT (South Korea), Telecom Italia (Italy), Telefonica (Spain), Telus (Canada) and Verizon (USA).

It is worth recollecting that besides PT’s inclusion in the DJSWI, it is also part of the FTSE4GOOD since 2005. Portugal Telecom’s sustainability strategy is thus recognized by the world’s two most important indices.
According to Zeinal Bava, “the sustainability war is a war of humanity, of the planet as a whole. This war can only be won if there is a commitment from everyone”. Therefore, “ it is the conduct and attitude of everybody that will make PT remain in these indices and even, who knows, improve its position as one of the most responsible companies in the domain of sustainability in Europe, in its sector”.

For Portugal Telecom, sustainability is a strategic priority in all its aspects: economic, social and environmental – and in the different markets where PT is present. Therefore, PT’s fifth strategic goal is to become a reference in its sector in terms of sustainability. It is today clear that PT has already reached such goal.

The Dow Jones Sustainability Index is one of the most conceited indices worldwide, analyzing the performance of companies listed in the New York Stock Exchange in terms of sustainability, being considered a reference for analysts and investors.
