By signing the first Memorandum of Cooperation in Portugal for the inclusion of disabled citizens, the Fundação PT (PT Foundation) strengthens its intervention in the area of inclusion and its commitment to improving citizen’s quality of life.
"What we are promoting here today is Communication for All", says Paulo Neves, at the beginning of the session marked by the signing of a protocol between Fundação PT and the National Institute for Rehabilitation, and approved by the Secretary of State for the inclusion of people with Disabilities and the Secretary of State for Infrastructures.
This is the country's first Memorandum of Cooperation for the inclusion of people with disabilities and is in line with the Europe 2020 strategy. The goal is that the four entities involved act in accordance with the strategic guidelines in terms of technological accessibility and "prioritizing communication for everyone," explains Paulo Neves.
During the session, the testimonies of several partners highlighted the importance of the multidisciplinary intervention carried out by the PT Foundation. Eulália Calado, President of the Federation of Portuguese Cerebral Palsy Associations which highlights the number of people with cerebral palsy which totaled 20,000 in Portugal in 2008. Of this number, 40 % of cases have communication difficulties and the PT Foundation has solutions to address their issues.
Ida Brandão, responsible for TeleAula (telephone lesson), from the Ministry of Education, talks about video conferencing systems run with the PT Foundation, since 2006, through which students with serious diseases can remotely view classrooms. Also António Nogueira, Head of the project "Together we read," reveals that with the support of the PT Foundation it was possible to reach 2104 students with special needs.
The foundation has been collaborating with ANDITEC, Rehabilitation Technology for over 15 years. Luís Azevedo, General Director of the company, highlights the continuous way in which PT has provided solutions that change the lives of people with disabilities. "The area of augmentative communication would not be as developed as it is if it were not for the PT Foundation" he said.
"The institute was able to count on the availability of the PT Foundation from the outset and this availability has been manifested through various projects," further emphasizes José Madeira Serôdio, President of the National Institute for Rehabilitation.

The PT Foundation's strategic priorities of intervention are in health, education and volunteering, but also providing solutions for people with special needs. This last aspect is distinct. "With direct improvements in school integration and occupational and social participation of people with disabilities or special communication needs, the PT Foundation includes in its portfolio PT Special Solutions", reveals Paulo Neves.
